Beauty Tips for the Single Mom on the Go

Read Carefully

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and in the hands of those who have time. As a single mother, I don’t always have that luxury. I’ve often had to run out of the house, late for my flight, business meeting, or other professional function. Too many times have I had to get ready in the morning or prep myself for an interview with a baby on my hip. It’s caused a lot of ‘uh oh’ moments but luckily, I have picked up a few tricks throughout the years to share with other on-the-go moms.

  1. Pack backs ups.
I know it sounds silly, but having some of the bare essentials at the ready in your car or in your bag is crucial. As busy parents, we don’t always remember to slick on some mascara as we dash out of the house or swipe an underarm with deodorant. It’s not until we are safely packed in the car and on our way, that we have that moment of clarity. In those moments, it’s nice to know I have some back-ups in the center console.

Check out this post on the 7 beauty essentials to pack asap.

  2. Determine your last-minute, go-to hairstyle – then apply & repeat.
One of the most time-consuming aspects of beauty is hair care. From washing to drying, to styling and volumizing, I just don’t have the time sometimes. And when the snooze button is hit too many times, I am all but out of luck when it comes to my hair looking on point. So I have my own list of favorite ‘tresses in no time’ hairstyles that I can whip out while I’m dashing out the door. You’ll have to figure it out based on your unique attributes; hairstyles will be different depending on your hair, facial structure, and outfit. But it’s important you know the easiest & fastest hairstyles that work for you so you can always go to them when in a pinch (read these tips on the best last-minute hairstyles to find your fave!).

My got-to is the bun, easy and looks great! Check out these 3 easy bun updo’s from Lesassafras!

  3. Accessorize to draw the eye, um, elsewhere.
Accessories can be our best friends or our worst enemy. Really, choose those accessories wisely, ladies! When you’re throwing an outfit together as you grab your keys & go, rely on accessories to create a focal point. Because although you are all beautiful, when you don’t have time to shower or apply your makeup just so, you need to draw the eyes away from your stringy tresses or half-applied eyeliner. It’s ok, we’ve all been there, too many times.

My favorite is a pair of dangly earrings paired with a high collar top and last-minute bun or messy ponytail. The eye is drawn to the earrings while the high-neck top slenders and draws the eye up. It’s slimming and looks great in any season. Plus, the glitz of dangle earrings immediately makes an outfit look more ‘put together’ and makes a casual outfit a bit more glamorous. For those with little ones, keep the danglies in your purse until after you drop the little guy/gal off – nobody wants an ear tear early in the morning!

  4. Don’t skip the mascara.
Your eyes may be the window to your soul, but they also can make you look tired if you neglect them. When it comes to selecting makeup to put on in a pinch, go to your eyes first. Bright eyes are the key to looking awake while dull eyes can make you look tired – and look like you just woke up! So swipe on some mascara to brighten up your eyes and if you have time, dab a bit of white eyeshadow or highlighter on the inner corner of your eyes and underneath to give your eyes an extra ‘pop’ of freshness. Last, but not least, if you don’t have time to look your absolute best – don’t sweat it! Do the best you can in the time you have and who cares if your hair is a little greasy or your socks aren’t matching? You did your duties as a mother and got everyone up & out the door – you’re beautiful.
